author of the Bitcoin white paper envisioned and others are building is
an unstoppable force. We should not attempt to deter this innovation. And
governments cannot stop this innovation.
So one of the bigger stories this week is crypto exchange BitMEX going under CFTC investigation
and BitMEX is a bit of an interesting
crypto exchange because for those who are not really familiar, they solely
deal with Bitcoin as collateral for
exchanging derivatives and futures on their platform.
Now this makes BitMEX
a little bit different because pretty much every other crypto exchange out
there deals with some type of fiat
currency or stable coin. So when you're buying or selling Bitcoin, you're selling it or buying it with the US
dollars or some type of Fiat stable coin equivalent.
One of
the cool things about BitMEX are that besides being the largest in volume
platforms to trade Bitcoin on, they have products like 100 times leverage margin trading long or
short, which means if you had $100 worth of Bitcoin on the platform, you
could borrow up to like $10,000 worth of Bitcoin and trade with that, of
course, you'd have like a point 5% liquidation price, and it's most likely the
sort of high-risk products that have brought bitmex to the attention of the CFTC.
And then, of course, there's the notorious Nouriel Roubini,
who has gone on the record to debate the BitMEX
CEO Arthur Hayes, accusing him of fraud and deception. I mean, this guy
probably hates Bitcoin more than a cat hates taking a bath. And make sure make
he feel good.
They love that. One of the tricky things with BitMEX though
is that they've repeatedly said that they don't accept us, customers, on their
platform. And they're registered in the Seychelles, which is actually a
beautiful group of islands off the coast of East Africa that kind of giving
Panama and Belize a run for their money. In March of this year. Actually,
another crypto futures exchange like BitMEX called one broker was shut down by
the CFTC and fined about a million dollars.
So there is a bit of a precedent here but in terms of BitMEX, will kind of have to just wait
and see. The second big news this week is
that Justin sun the creator and founder of the Tron cryptocurrency is finally having his big sit down lunch with
Warren Buffett.
For those who don't know, the oracle of Omaha Warren Buffett
hosts a charity lunch every single year with the highest bidder gets to kind of
have a sit down with Warren Buffett himself. And this year, Justin sun won the
launch for approximately four and a half million dollars.
The winner of the launch is also allowed to bring about
seven guests and so Justin Sun is elected to bring some of the biggest names in
the crypto space. There's Charlie Lee,
who's the founder of Litecoin. That's going to becoming. Jeremy Allaire,
who's the circle CEO and who will be exchanged head Livia Wang, and there's
probably quite a few more that are going to be announced in the next couple of days.
This
isn't really like a massive groundbreaking news story, but I
kind of wanted to mention it because it really fits in with the theme of 2019
which is sort of Bitcoin exiting the
puberty stage of its life cycle. Last week we had Donald Trump talking about
it. This week, we had the US Congress, obviously all about crypto. And then this
week we have Warren Buffett having a side of a rat poison squared with his
steak dinner. About five-six ago we asked Charlie Munger we were sitting right
there what he thought of Bitcoin and
he said rat poison back then it was about 100 plus dollars per Bitcoin today.
It's 9000 Is it still rat poison? Well,
Bobby rat poison squared. I feel like all the news so far
this year is sort of reminds me of that scene from breakfast club where Ali
shootie kind of gets a makeover and everyone looks at her and off Every
congressperson in their mom had the opportunity this week to take a grandstand
against Facebook and Libra. And you
bet your bottom dollar they did just that. The whole hearing on Libra was split into multiple days with
multiple testimonies, but the gems are really all from the six grueling
hours of Libra co-creator David
Marcus's testimony, here are some of the gems.
Now we're told by some that innovation is always good. The
most innovative thing that happened this century is when big Osama bin Laden
came up with the innovative idea of flying two airplanes into towers. That's
the most consequential innovation. Although this may do more to endanger
America than even that, like a toddler who has gotten his hands on a book of
matches, Facebook has burned down the house over and over and called every

You know, a lot of people in this space will use a phrase
that you may be familiar with. There's Bitcoin and then there's Bitcoin. Are
you familiar with that phrase and what people might mean by that, but
undoubtedly, the most powerful moment for the cryptocurrency community from
that entire hearing was Democratic Congressman Tom Emmer is closing statements
on Libra.
I've heard some incredibly uninformed comments from members
of Congress today. And yesterday, as I'm sure you're aware, Bitcoin is now 10
years old. And now suddenly, magically, Congress is responding after more than
a decade, Congress has apparently started to care. I'm glad after all these
years that Congress has finally decided to pay attention to the technology that
could again, just like the internet, up in the way we do everything, nothing
has been more clear on this committee than the blind aversion to change that
some of our members have constantly espoused, even when it wasn't required, or
even the subject of the hearing. Unfortunately, Mr. Marcus, you and your
company have decided to approach this undertaking, with as equal a level of
ignorance and misunderstanding as those who wish to quell any new developments
in cryptocurrency people have concerns with the amount of data you have on them.
And now you want to be their money to I hope members of this
committee investigate the fact that quote, the people already have options
separate from your central control, individuals, insistent on the exclusion of
middlemen, and the freedom of the individual will continue to create open
networks separate from central control. At the end of this day, Libra presents an incredible
opportunity to define what it is not. It presents an incredible opportunity for
everyone on this committee to learn more about actual cryptocurrencies.
When this hearing was announced, I was optimistic that this
was finally the time a major company wanted to be involved with this
revolution, and that the majority wanted to actually think and learn about
these new innovations. It appears However, they have decided to entrench
themselves in the fear of the unknown and the fear of change, and your company
has done nothing to allay these fears.
As you move forward acknowledging that the bill to ban your
actions have no constitutional basis, let alone a basis in logic, and that no
one is willing to actually put their name on this proposal to ban private
innovation. Will you work with me and invest educational efforts to show these
members of Congress that we should work to better understand the innovations
underlying cryptocurrency rather than doing their best to put their head in the
sand and ignore change and a backup congressman embers point there is a huge
need for more crypto and blockchain education in Washington, especially when you
get ridiculous statements like these from the Secretary of Treasury because
cash is laundered all the time and used for nefarious.
That's all we've ever used for nefarious activities, and
we'd certainly had plenty of them. I don't think that's I don't think that's
accurate. All the cash is laundered all the time. We have the strongest AML
system in the world. There's been a lot of nefarious activities historically
and it's never involved Bitcoin. So obviously, it's been, you know, pretty
successfully done with cash. That's all I'm saying. It unless you think I don't
think it's been successfully done with cash. I'll push back on that we're gonna
make sure that Bitcoin doesn't do and so this week was another wild week for
crypto volatility we bolted down to about $9,000 us kind of a low 9000s before
having this massive short squeeze move up to around $11,000 which means that
from last week's prediction Satoshi is one for one. And so this week we have
another guest analyst on the show who's going to give us the lowdown on where
the bitcoin price is going next.

And so of course, upcoming news this week is Justin sun is going to have his
big lunch with Warren Buffett, I believe it's going to be about Wednesday or
Thursday sometime this week, there's going to be a bit of a press meet and
greet after we'll see if Warren Buffett's changed his mind on Bitcoin. Probably
not though, it'll be realistic. And just a big shout out if you're watching
this and you live in a major city around the world, there's more than likely
going to be a Bitcoin or crypto meetup around where you are and I highly
suggest getting out and going to some of these sometime.
I'm a really introverted person. So generally when I'm
learning about Bitcoin and cryptocurrency it's from staying up all night
watching YouTube videos or going through forum posts or reading white papers.
But at least in my local city of Vancouver, there are a ton of crypto events
going on every single week where everyone from industry veterans to total
crypto newbies are coming together to talk about Bitcoin and the future of money and the potential it has to really
change the world going forward.
